´23 on Film

In 2023, the pixels took a hiatus for me, yielding to silver and chrome. For a period of 12 months, I vowed to shoot only film, which, save for very few exceptions and the use of my phone for certain things prove to work out very well. The results of that initiative are collected in this portfolio. Aside from the images, this experience has also resulted in some valuable learnings; it has fundamentally changed what I seek in the process. When each image must be shot with a sense of trust, no immediate verification being available, when each picture has a negative as a testament to its authenticity, when each film must be carefully chosen for its particular signature, when each negative must be developed and scanned as a matter of manual labor, the output has just so much more depth than a mere, brittle, grid of pixels derived from a digital imaging sensor. For all these reasons, among many others, film will remain a prominent feature of my approach to photography in the foreseeable future.
