Urnäsch I (Neuer Sylvester)
From the early hours of daybreak on every New Year’s Eve, imposing figures, dressed either in cheerful traditional gowns or in natural leaves and tree-limbs, carry heavy bells from homestead to homestead in the valleys of Appenzell AR, where they perform a very specific form of jodel. An almost surreal experience and a beautifully lively tradition. The marching order is as orchestrated as the performances. The men under the heavy costumes, adorned with tall wooden headgear and full face coverings, are received with water and wine on each of their visits. But no applause, which would traditionally be frowned upon.
